Pilgrim Footsteps

Along the Way - Q & A

Many people want to know how far I am walking in total and how far each day?  The Camino Frances is 780 kms  but we are starting in Burgos which is at the 500kn mark.  How far I plan to walk each day has changed from when I did my first camino in 2019 when we walked an average of 25kms each day. Having a heart attack in 2024 means I need to be  sensible so we will start  slow averaging  10-15 kms for the first few days.  I remember being told in 2019 that the first 10 days are the hardest.  Basically, each day we walk, eat, walk, eat, sleep & repeat.

The next question is about accommodation. Along the way there are albergues or hostels where you can  stay for anywhere between 10 and 3o Euro. Some provide a community meal and breakfast. Some of the cafes have a special pilgrim menu for around 15Euro. One thing we will need to do is ensure we have snacks just in case. Accommodation is dormitory style with bunkbeds, some might have blankets, sheets provided. My budget for the camino is 60 Euro a day.

Towns & Cities along the Way

During our 500km journey we will pass though many small villages and some larger cities.  Our starting point is Burgos, the provincial capital of the autinomous region of Castile and Leon. It is known for its medieval architecture in particular its French Gothic Cathedral and the Castilo de Burgos.

Leon is the capital of the Province of Leon.  It  began as a Roman military camp in 29 CE. It has a 13th Century de Leon.

Six weeks carrying a backpack what do you take. An important lesson learned from the Camino is realising how  little you really need. The idea is that your pack should weigh no more than 10% of your bodyweight.  So I will survive with 2 sets of clothes plus a pair of trousers that convert to shorts, a minimum of toiletries etc, medication and my trusty Innov8 shoes. St Oscar Romero once said "Aspire not to have more but to be more." The camino  is a good time to put that into practice.

Most of the places we will pass though or stay in are small villages like Tardajos and Moratinos.
