The general consensus in the pilgrim community was that yesterday's route was terrible. We met a lovely Australian couple who live in Hungary, Lyn is Japanese and Henry is part Hungarian. They were a great help in sorting out our rooms. Today we all decided to train to Santarem so we could spend more time looking around. But... trains were on strike, so we taxied instead. After lunch we walked to the old Moorish castle. From there you can see the countryside surrounding the town. Santarem sits on top of a very steep hill. The ideal site for a fortified village in the 12th century. There are churches on nearly every corner. In medieval times each church was the centre of a village. This is a very ancient town with some very 21st century facilities. Jay was in KFC heaven!!. We checked into our hostel which provides breakfast and a kitchen stocked with plenty of food to make dinner and snacks for tomorrow's walk of 30kms to Golega. The first photos are from Azambuja.

you're going on such cool adventures jay. I'm so excited to hear all about them when you get back. :)
