This isn't easy, but it's worth it.

Pilgrimages were never meant to be easy. In medieval times pilgrims had to contend with the plague, bandits and robbers, wars; the crusades started in part to protect pilgrims from invading Islamic warlords. So far I've not had the plague and all the people have been very friendly. But, and there's always a but. I have picked up a couple of nasty skin infections, no not school sores, just cuts and scratches that turn ugly and make you feel like an outcast. Eventually I found a Farmacia and got the necessary treatment. Yesterday I walked from Reliegos to Villarente where I stayed in a lovely albergue, decorated in a very traditional family style. The best part was the delicious vegetable soup that was served at the community dinner. The pork was not so good, more like shoe leather. Reliegos has something to do with a meteor strike and a castle. I saw murals depicting this history, but I have not looked it up yet. On the way I stopped at Mansilla for breakfast before leaving on more flat straight dusty paths for Villarente. The route was lined with maize fields bordered by canals. Spot the picture of the Maori Madonna I left at a little rest area en route. Left Villarente early this morning under the watchful eye of Sister Moon and am now in Leon resting and recuperating. #georgiascamino
